One of Australia’s most striking Second Life locations is Melbourne Laneways on ABC Island.
It was launched in October 2007 as a joint initiative of the ABC and Multimedia Victoria. Unfortunately, its days are numbered, with the build being eliminated in the next week or two according to ABC Admin, Wolfie Rankin.
The upside will be the increased space for new developments on ABC Island but it’s fair to say that Melbourne Laneways will be missed. It will also provide an unfortunate perception that Second Life is continuing to dwindle as a desirable virtual world location.
Some further shots of Melbourne Laneways for posterity:
Check it out in-world while you can.
Oh, it's not that bad.
While it's true that Laneways is going, it's more about MMVs lease on the Island being up, than ABC Island going downhill… What will be left is land which can be used for something new, and this is a good thing.
It was nice to have a bit of Melbourne in SL [Being from there myself], I think there are at least three Harbour Bridges in SL… and one is plenty.
Only a few people are sad to see the Laneways go, as it was a really laggy area…
and yet I found that if I sat there for a while, people would gather and chat, so perhaps a place for conversation would be good.
What will become of the space is anyones guess.
There will be a party on the Laneways this Friday [I think, I need to make sure] look out for notices and
messages in the ABC friends group.
Wolfie!
I think a party might need to be before Friday given the demolition trucks and cranes are moving in (me) and it will be no more on Thursday after 5pm this week.
Can't wait to see the 'new' community creation spring up in its wake 🙂

Oh – unless the planned party is to dance and celebrate on the rubble 🙂
Party was good, finished at 1am because I wanted to go to bed…
but wound up chatting till almost 3am.
Although people kept popping in and out, I think we averaged about 20 to 30
users on the island at any given time during the event.
An international audience too. 🙂
If we keep having events like this, the Island will prove it's worth.
Send any event ideas in a notecard to Willard.
