‘Get an Aussie Politician into Second Life’ Poll – need your suggestions now!

Reuters is reporting that the US Congress will have a presence in SL, and it got me to thinking about the upcoming political cycle in Australia. New South Wales goes to the polls in March and all of Australia is likely to vote in another Federal election before year’s end.

Which politicians (if any) would you like to see make an appearance in SL? We’ll approach the most popular suggestions in real life and ask if they’d be interested in joing SL.

  1. Hi Shai – I have to admit that was my first thought as well though I’m actually not sure how tech savvy he is 😉 That said, if he’s in the top 3 I’ll definitely approach him.

  11. Hi Mabb,

You’ve made some brilliant points. I agree that there’s no point in getting pollies in SL to electioneer. Your ideas around appropriate ministers / shadow ministers is spot on – I actually think I’ll email the four you’ve mentioned plus Garrett and Stott Despoja.

I’ll let everyone know how it goes. And again – thanks for the ideas Mabb!

Guys I’m sorry but what is the point of having a politician appear in SL???? Is it because pollies from the US have appeared and ou want to even the score, or is there an actual goal in mind.

I was very cross about the sucky garbage that went on in various SL Blogs when that Warner d00d came into SL and people made such a big deal about it. All he did was make a speech. I really am against this whole thing of celebrities “appearing” in SL unless they actually add some value to SL. You know, like a concert or meet & greet for ordinary residents.

Or, if we really want to raise awareness in our pollies about what’s going on in here (and think carefully about that!). In that case it couldn’t be a simple appearance, it would have to be a guided tour, perhaps made into a machinima.

I think the person who would be most interested in SL and most in tune with it would actually be an ex-politician – Barry Jones. He would SO get off on Svarog 🙂

But really, despite our obvious political leanings, if awareness is the goal then you should approach ministers and shadow ministers in appropriate portfolios. Kim Carr is the Shadow Minister for Industry, Innovation, Science & Research and Stephen Conroy is the Shadow Minister for Communications & Information Technology. Helen Coonan is Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts and you might also consider Julie Bishop, who is
Minister for Education, Science and Training because of the many education uses of SL.
