International Technology Expo 2007

Over the next three days SL will be host to the International Technology Expo – 2007. It opens on Friday April 20, at noon PDT (April 21st at 5.00am Australian EST).

The organisers have billed it as “showcasing the most innovative in technology products and services created by its residents for business and personal needs.”

The full listing of expo scheduled events has been posted but along with the technology focus there should be a few visitors dropping in for the concert events (in Australian EST):

April 21 Midday Concert – John Legend
April 22 Midday Concert – Black Eyed Peas

The event has an aussie connection in one of the major sponsors, Melbourne headquartered, Cattle Puppy Productions.

UPDATE: final confirmation of John Legend and Black Eyed Peas is pending.

JJ’s Coffee Bar – Music Streaming Evolution

Remember Happy Days, the iconic American program of last millennium?

It started off with a shot of a jukebox playing a record of the program’s signature tune. Throughout the past 100 years or so the idea of people listening to, talking about and enjoying music has been a mainstay of modern culture.

One of the issues confronting SL is the provision of content and it may be through the medium of music that the content void may be filled in these early innovative and developmental days.

Take, for instance, JJ’s Coffee Bar.

coffeebar.jpg

JJ’s currently streams music from the UK, The USA and Australia.

The owner, Jeremy Jorda, has chosen to use Triple J as his Australian choice of provider. And, whilst there may be some question of copyright issues there can be little doubt that music, and radio programs in general, are an easily executed content source for areas in SL.

The question may not be whether the radio stations listed at JJ’s Coffee bar have an issue with such online provision of content, but whether they can afford not to be part of the developing medium. After all, many radio stations already embrace apps like MP3 streaming through iTunes radio or Real Player, and Windows Media Player. Venues such as JJ’s Coffee Bar are the obvious next step in that evolution.

Profile: Bella Dutton

Bella Dutton is an Aussie SL resident who has a very busy second life split between her involvement with QT Labs and her own clothing line, BDD (Bella Dutton Designs). Add to this Bella’s role as a member of the production crew for the band Space Junkies and a raft of other building and shop projects and Bella has filled the nine months of her residency in SL to the brim.

After opening up a shop called “Red Earth” within her first few weeks in SL, Bella is now at the point where she is running a team of designers for her current shop BDD whilst acting as part of the QT Labs group as an Advanced Virtual Integration Expert.

I caught up with Bella the other night and asked her where she was at with her Second Life and involvement in QT Labs.

Bella Dutton: We believe that at QT Labs we provide a virtual integration of creation, nurturing, building and subsequent maitenence/upgrades of virtual communities. We understand the philosophy, design requirements and intended use and schedule for occupancy so we provide the skills to integrate any organisation or collaborate into SL enviroment/community.

Graham: And you personally – where do you see yourself in say 6 to 12 months in SL? Apart from the AVIE and QT involvement, the shop is your personal enterprise isn’t it?

Bella Dutton: It is, l work with a team of designers and work as a mentor too for newbies.

Graham: I have noticed that SL is a sharing community. Do you think that aspect is a vital one?

Bella Dutton: It does have that sharing community, that is very true as when you think with us all here we are creatures of nature, we all need to feel part of a group or team.

Bonza Gallery

Tucked away on a small platform in the sky is a new Aussie start-up business called Bonza Gallery. The gallery is the selling point for photos of various Australian places, landscapes and tourist attractions such as the Opera House. All scenes and photos are typically Australian.

Each picture is $150L and the proprietors have attempted to provide a product that allows builders to incorporate pictures for homes, commercial areas and any other settings SL residents are building.

bonza.jpg

Being primarily a gallery of photo images sourced by its RL professional photographer Bonza Bailey, the offerings in their gallery are small in number at theBonza Gallery location. However, its strength is in giving a wide taste of the kind of images they claim number over 1 million images, all shot in Australia.

Bonza also offer a personalised service by which customers can request a specific type or style of image and they will attempt to source it for clients.

Look up either Bonza Bailey or Diaz Anzac at their gallery or IM them if you need an image for your current SL build.

John Howard in SL

How many John Howards do you think you will find in SL at the moment? I went and had a look and… there are six of them! I also noticed an interesting coincidence. All these John Howards were created between the 24th August and 31st August 2006 but only one of them, perhaps the real John Howard stepping forward, had the correct spelling of our Prime Minister’s name.

johnhoward.jpg

I’m not one for conspiracy theories but it struck me as a little weird that in the space of seven days at the end of August 2006 there six John Howards appeared in SL. None of them have any details in their profile other than the default details. It’s not unusual for new members to do some kind of profile adjustment, maybe a bit of information or a pithy little witicism on life, second life, death and the hereafter. Not these Johnnies – just a blank canvas waiting for, well, maybe an election?

If one of these John Howards happened to be linked to our current PM perhaps other members of our parliamentary system have also created themselves a new constituency. So, following my instincts I looked for Kevin Rudd…

… no luck!

Who knows, maybe closer to the next federal election we may find a few other of our illustrious leaders.

“second life online university degree”

Those are the terms I used for a recent Google search. And what do you think was near the top of the list on the results of this search?

The listing of Ohio University – their presence in SL was my first look at an in-world university when I was wandering aimlessly around some time ago. The Ohio University Island is a replica of the real life campus in pathways, buildings and layout.

Their presence along with a top 5 Google search billing makes for a formidable competitor to the Australian pathfinders currently under construction and development.

What makes this the more pertinent is the recent article “PM, analyse this: IT is going down the gurgler” by Grahame Philipson, which lays out some fairly startling facts and issues about Australia slipping down the IT rankings in a global market.

With the rapidity of technological change, the emerging powerhouse of India and almost weekly prognostations from political leaders that Australia is in some sort of parlous state education-wise, perhaps, the question that needs to be asked is can any amount of cash injection for broadband access from the Future Fund come close to reversing the kind of decline that Grahame Philipson has indicated.

SL has been around for a few years now. Ohio University has top billing on Google. India is currently dominating in many circles of technology R&D and commercial enterprise (remember where Hotmail started?).

Perhaps an articulated IT policy that goes beyond rhetoric and supports the future of an Australian based knowledge industry is in order?

First in, best dressed – is SL worth it for Aussie Universities?

For some time now I have been following the developments of three particular universities that have established islands in SL. The RMIT island known as Ormond Island, the USQ island of Terra Incognita and the amazingly designed Esperance Island of the Australian Film TV and Radio School.

These three islands are relatively easy to locate by a simple use of the “Place” tab in the SL search window an using the term “University”. For the AFTRS presence searchers need to use “AFTRS”. I feel that AFTRS would benefit in using the term university in their descriptor, as the average person may find locating them difficult.

The resulting 49 hits from a “university” term search will give the sum total of serious contenders on the SL Education market. To date Ormond Island, Terra Incognita and Esperance are the only three Australian universities that have actively sought to allow non-student visitors to explore and consider the options of tertiary education experiences via the SL medium.

This is a vitally important aspect to consider in relation to the global marketing of education. Many Australian universities provide distant education courses yet currently we have only three exploring the provision, practising or marketing of their product via SL.

With the launch of the BigPond islands and the soon to be launched ABC Island, there will be an increased number of Australians exploring this strange, bizarre and somewhat perplexing world. All of these newbies will have one question on their minds: “What is there to do here?”

For USQ, RMIT and AFTRS their answer is simple – come and do a course with us! Without such provision of subsidiary offerings, SL becomes just another form of chat forums for people with ‘interesting proclivities’.

Looking for Telstra Bigpond’s Islands?

One of the criticisms that has been levelled at SL has been the way in which the search function works. This is frustratingly true for those of us trying to find Telstra’s Bigpond presence.

Most people will do the obvious thing and just type in Telstra or Bigpond in the search window. Note that the default tab is “All”. This is one of the main problems with the search function. If you choose the other tabs you need to type in your search all over again.

Most people would assume that the “All” tab means just that, all categories are searched and results posted, in some cases you find what you want in others, as above, you have a zero result.

In the BigPond Islands example, a search of “All” is not very successful at all:

However, if you select the “Places” tab and retype your query you will find that not only is BigPond easily located, but all the sub-sections and islands are listed:

So the moral of the story is to try and use a variety of queries and tabs when searching for a specific area. It may take a while but you may just find what you’re looking for.

Guitar Lessons Anyone?

Nickeax runs a small Australian music enterprise in SL called Guitars Australia.

A visit to the SL store will enable any young or young at heart rocker to outfit themselves with a variety of Marshall amps and Gibson Explorer Mark II style guitars. The Marshall pack includes a Marshall JCM800 100w head and 2 Marshall JCM 1960 cabinets.

Once kitted out you can wander over to the Guitar Australia website to start your education in the world of guitar playing. And, of course no guitar player can go without the obligatory Stairway to Heaven treatment, which is found in the “classic solos explored” section of the website.

Another plus is it should enable a less ear assaulting barrage compared to a real life garage session. If only Nickeax sold drum kits for those of us that can’t read music!

RMIT Revisited

I dropped in to the RMIT island the other day and bumped into the island’s director John Guffey. As the students start this coming week, further development will take off as much of the building and design work will be undertaken by the students themselves. John indicated that access to the island will not be limited to students alone. In fact, they are going to open more space – and there is already talk of another island.

John had an interesting view that “we want aussie unis to clump islands together”. That kind of scenario would be extremely interesting from two points of view.

Firstly, the competition for students and research funding would dictate that “clumping” all Australian University SL islands close to each other sounds to be a curious goal as universities are traditionally seen to be vying with each other.

Secondly, the concept of an SL Archipelago of Australian Universities could attract interest from the global marketplace of students. It would set it apart from other countries with tertiary education presences in SL.

It will be interesting to see how the current Australian Universities in SL respond to this proposal and whether those without an SL presence are prepared to come on board if the Archipelago happens.
