Not Long Now

Actually, it is. Long Now is a foundation that hopes “to creatively foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years” i.e. it is involved in projects that work against the “faster/cheaper mindset”. One of its founding board members is musical icon Brian Eno and he has an art installation entitled ’77 Million Paintings’ that is about to make its debut in Second Life.

Eno’s enormous body of work in fusing aural and visual landscapes is an obvious fit for Second Life. And there’s no risk of SL being labeled faster OR cheaper.

What will the real world tolerate?

The response to Daniel Linden’s blog post last week has been forceful and fairly widespread, demarcating along ‘freedom of expression’ and legal compliance lines.

The United Protest forum contains the full transcript of a chat with Daniel Linden’s colleague Robin Linden, in response to the concerns raised after Daniel Linden’s post. Robin goes to some lengths to emphasise that there’s been no change in approach in regards to freedoms within SL.

For me, the challenges arond the whole issue are encapsulated in two statements attributed to Robin Linden:

“I have to tell you though, that we can’t address every single corner case or possibility”

and

“In part because the real world hasn’t decided which of these things they’ll tolerate”

There are essentially two camps on the issue: those who believe that SL is a totally different medium and therefore conducive to re-evaluating what constitutes acceptable sexual expression and those essentially applying real world mores and taboos to the virtual world experience. On top of that are the legal requirements of Linden Lab. It’s a messy, complicated mix and one that everyone will continue to grapple with. And like it or not, it’s the real world that will be the arbiter in the end, hence Robin Linden’s comment:

“so we’re working with various governments to understand their individual concerns “.

It’s not hard to imagine there’s going to be a growing amount of governmental consultation going on in order to head off an all-out witch hunt once a morally dubious in-world issue arises, with widepsread community demand for action.

Second Convention ‘Summer’ 2007

Yesterday we received the information from Second Convention organiser, Zatzai Asturias, on the ‘Summer’ iteration coming up next week. I’m not sure using geo-centric seasonal titles is the best idea for a virtual world event, however Zatzai summarises it as follows:

“Second Convention is an opportunity for people to come together at a large, organised, and fun event and see a part of the Second Life community they might not have otherwise known about. It’s a chance for businesses to connect with their customer base, show off new ideas, products and get feedback. It’s a chance to listen to a musician perform live, compete in an exotic sport, riff on a friend and network with potential business partners.

The convention is open to all who wish to attend, no pre-registration is required and there are no fees for attendance. The events take place on the sim Artificial Isle from Thursday June 14th – Saturday June 16th 2007″.

Anshe Chung defines relationship with WSE

This morning, World Stock Exchange CEO LukeConnell Vandeverre provided SLOz with a notecard which in his is “the announcement I was provided to post at will”. It’s an explanation by Anshe Chung of her relationship to investment in SL and the WSEWe’ve posted the full text below:

“Dear fellow pioneers in the Metaverse economy,

As interest in this topic increased recently, I think it is time to let you know a little bit about what role my company and I played in regards to seed and venture capital in Second Life and what you can and can’t expect in the future.

Since summer 2004 I have actively and with very significant funds supported almost 100 startup businesses and non-profit projects in Second Life. Some of these have been successful and are widely known, others failed. We talk about more than L$60 million that I, and later ACS, have invested in people’s ideas, creating opportunities.

Most of these investments, even some donations to non-profit projects, I decided to keep low profile and not disclose to the public. This has several reasons. The first is, that when I am helping the newbies I am helping the newbies for the sake of helping the newbies and not for PR. The second is, that I don’t want the newbies to become collateral targets of bad people who tend to go after prominent targets and whatever they can associate with these. The third reason is that I tend to be pretty hands-off with most of these ventures.

I also noticed that some people, especially newbie investors, think something is “safe” when they hear “Anshe is involved”. This is not the case when it comes to undisclosed seed and venture investments. There is a fundamental dilema between giving newbies a chance and excluding fraud or risk. What is worse, some people even confuse the role of an investor with the role of somebody who is actively involved in management.

I would be careful with businesses who advertise to you that I am an investor. You will most likely not be facing the best investments in my basket, because the really well managed and trustworthy companies will not have to advertise their shares to you by revealing my investment without my consent. In some cases I might not even be an investor.

In the future I don’t plan to change much about this. I will be launching the Dreamland Stock Exchange (DSE) that aims to bring a small number of companies on as IPO’s that will have gone through a rigorous review by me and my team. However the “majority” of SL ventures will be traded on exchanges such as the World Stock Exchange.

I hope the WSE will continue to grow, especially after the huge investment I have made to support Luke’s project. I look forward to the new shareholder voting features along with the increased measures to deal with fraud and insider trading. Please understand that I am in no way involved in the management or decision making at Hope Capital Ltd and the WSE. Like all of you, I hope that everyone in charge will remain honest and professional.

This message from Anshe Chung is certainly taking a conciliatory line in relation to investment in SL and her encouragement of increased transparency measures for WSE will likely assist its legitimacy amidst some regular criticism of its operations. Transparency of such operations, whether they be the WSE or DSE will be pivotal to instill the level of confidence required to ensure either virtual institution moves beyond the support they currently have.

A new viewer update and some Windlight Beauty

1.17.0 is on its way from around 11pm Wednesday night AEST. As mentioned on the Linden Blog, release notes will be released soon. It seems doubtful that Windlight functionality will shift over to the main viewer, but hey we’ve been wrong before.

On Windlight, there’s a plethora of great screen shots appearing, including this one:

The sculptured prim / Windlight combination is certainly going to create some new visual horizons for SL.

Linden Lab draws deeper moral line in the sand

The official Linden blog was the forum today for Linden Lab to encourage SL residents to report a range of issues:

– acts involving or appearing to involve children or minors
– real-life images, avatar portrayals, and other depictions of sexual violence including rape
– real-life images, avatar portrayals, and other depictions of extreme or graphic violence

It’s hard to imagine a significant backlash against such restrictions although defining terms such as ‘extreme’ or ‘graphic’ is always fraught with inconsistencies. With tens of thousands of people logged in at any one time, following up complaints is also likely to be difficult. The hope is that the ‘haven of creativity and social vision’ desired doesn’t just drive the worst aspects of SL underground either within SL or elsewhere.

The scenery just got prettier

Yesterday’s Linden Blog posting heralded a major step forward in the visual strength of the SL platform – Linden’s acquisition of the Windlight graphics technology from Windward Mark Interactive.

As Linden Labs say themselves, the short story on the technology is “killer skies”. The initial shots supplied certainly live up to that description:

The Windlight-enabled viewer is available “now” for PC users – though I can’t find the specific download link. No firm date on the Mac release as yet.

What’s not clear for Australian users of SL is the impact on bandwidth and whether lag will increase further. However, announcements like this do flag the oncoming wave of enhancements resulting from open sourcing SL. And here’s a YouTube video provided by Linden Labs to showcase Windlight:

SL support systems take the next step

Cyn Linden has announced the imminent launch of an improved support system for SL users. In the past few months there appeared to be a deterioration in support options for users including the closing of a number of sections on the SL community forums.

The new system is a tiered one – if you pay to use SL then your level of support increases. For premium users, support will predominantly be via the website however the inclusion of a support history is welcome to track responses to identified issues. If your land fees exceed $125 US per month you have access to live phone help on top of the other optiions.

I’d expect some backlash from free account holders on the new tiered structure and given the likelihood of most support requests coming from new users, Linden Labs have firmly directed those users to ‘read the manual’.

The full list of options are:

Premium Accounts: Premium accounts that pay a membership fee monthly, quarterly or annually get further access. They can:
-Access the Knowledge Base and solution finder
-Submit a support ticket
-Have a live chat session with a support team member
-Have access to their own personalized support history page which tracks all ticket and correspondence, as well as live text chat session for later reference and to monitor progress

These services will initially be available through the Support Portal on the website.

Concierge Accounts: Concierge clients (US$125 per month or greater in Land fees, mainland or private estate) have access to the above services plus:
-Dedicated phone line currently with 17/5 coverage and moving to 24/7 shortly
-Live text chat and ticketing coverage with extended hours
-Monitoring of rollback requests17/7 with grid back up the hours we aren’t yet covering

Maddie McCann campaign makes SL appearance

UK newspaper, The Liverpool Echo has created a poster originally designed for dissemination via email. Whilst wandering around the Stanlee sim which hosts the Liverpool replica, I noticed Maddie McCann had entered Second Life:

Child Pornography – Linden Lab’s firm response

The Official Linden Blog carried one of its more serious topics today – allegations of child pornography. The blog post details the chain of events. Linden Labs’ reaction certainly demonstrates their belief in stamping out anything related to child exploitation and they deserve commendation for that.

Based on the blog post, I took the opportunity to use the SL search functionality and typed in ‘child’ – the result was everything from anti-child pornography groups through to childrens clothing and body-shape stores. The second location we teleported to contained the following images:

Another location appeared more innocuous but still contained body shapes like this:

We’re not asserting that the locations we saw are involved in child pornography. However, these images are obviously of under-18’s. I saw another picture of a child-like body shape for sale in nothing but panties which contained a sales description of ‘pert preteen body’.

That on its own may not constitute pornography but it’s difficult to rationalise the use of child body shapes beyond some very unhealthy intentions. There are people in SL who want to be carefree and live like a child, but arguably this isn’t the majority of the market.

We’ve contacted Linden Labs via their PR company for comment and we’ll report any response.

Update (November 2007): Reuters is reporting that the UK have undercover police investigating pedophilia in virtual worlds including Second Life. Second Life Insider is also running a story on Wonderland sim and Sky News’ reporting on it.

Update 2: Croga is an excellent site that provides confidential information to those concerned about their viewing of child pornography online.
